StandUp for Kids: Benefit Happy Hour and Cell Phone Illumination Night

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) October 29, 2007 -- In July 2007, thanks to the support of Virgin Mobile and the Re*Generation Campaign, Congress and the Senate officially named November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. The purpose of this designation is to provide a platform from which to educate the public about the desperate situation surrounding America's homeless and runaway youth. According to the National Runaway Switchboard, an estimated 1.3 million young people are living on the streets at any given time. Some have runaway from abusive or otherwise harmful situations, others have been kicked out or are part of a family that has lost their home. They are scared, alone, and in danger. Furthermore, an average 13 homeless or runway youths die on the streets everyday - but STANDUP FOR KIDS wants to call an end to this.

In honor of National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, there will be a special Benefit Happy Hour & Cell Phone Illumination Night on Tuesday, November 13th to help raise awareness about youth homelessness. The event, starting at 6:00PM, will be at Goodnite Gracie located in downtown Royal Oak at 224 South Sherman Avenue. Proceeds from drink purchases will go the the Detroit Chapter of STANDUP FOR KIDS. Furthermore, there will be a Cell Phone Illumination Night later in the evening where participants can line up on Main Street in downtown Royal Oak just south of 11 Mile Road and raise their open/lit-up cell phones at exactly 7:13PM in recognition of the 13 homeless and runaway youth who lose their lives on our country's streets everyday. The Cell Phone Illumination Night will be happening at the same time all across the country in other STANDUP FOR KIDS chapter cities. Both the Benefit Happy Hour & Cell Phone Illumination Night are part of the STANDUP FOR KIDS "Calling An End To Youth Homelessness" campaign - the national awareness and fundraising effort based on a partnership with ReCelluar, Inc. - whereby used cell phones and cell phone accessories are collected to generate funds for the organization and relay the need the call an end to youth homelessness. Used cell phone and cell phone accessories can be donated at Goodnite Gracie from 6:00PM until midnight during the event. The Cell Phone Illumination Night is open to anyone who wishes to participate. The Benefit Happy Hour is open to anyone age 21 or over.
